Last visit to the market
Today was our last Saturday in Utrecht, next Saturday we will in on the plane. Our last visit to the market was hard, but not as hard as I though (worried perhaps tears, but no).
Over the past year, two people in the market have been very important to us, Lonneke (the cheese lady) and Tony (the fruit guy). They have always been kind and understanding and friendly to us. Especially to Elena. Our experience in Utrecht would have been very different without their Saturday morning friendship, so we are very grateful. We took them small presents todays.

We loaded up on dried fruit and bought 2.5 kilos of cheese vacume packed for shipment back to the US in our bags. It sounds like alot, but considering how much cheese we eat now, it doesn't look like very much. But the bags are already heavy. We biked back through centrum with the carrilion playing. Nothing beats biking through the canals with 60 roses (for 5E!) while the bells chime. We decided that we MUST visit the Dom Kerk before we leave - we've biked around it for months. So we did. Pretty, but odd, as a storm (tornado?) wiped out the middle section of the 'cross' of the cathedral in the 1400's. The Dom (spire) remains and the 'church' is separated by it from a road with a stubby appearance inside. But pretty enough and worth a visit. We bought a few postcards of 'our town' to take with us.

Tonight we had a real dutch walk (read standing under trees to avoid the random rain shower) to Venezia. A few weeks ago one of the venezia girls said to us (in dutch) after we ordered, 'last year you ordered in English, now you are ordering in Dutch.' Wow, sometimes you feel invisible, but you really aren't. Anyway, elena had pear with sprinkles (one of their best flavors, we all agree), Jake went with cinnamon, and I had hazelnoot. We are hoping to get out for icecream almost every night this week. Blacksburg has a ben and jerry's, and I know a lot of people will disagree, but we just aren't big fans. And our even walks through the town in the evening light for Venezia are hard to beat. but then we didn't imagine that would have been such an important thing when we moved here. Who knows what Blacksburg holds.
