Yummy Dinner
By chance, the resturant attached to our hotel was really amazing. So we decided to splurge and had a lovely meal with a great bottle of Portugues red wine and an extremely well behaved toddler.
The resturant was part of a local program showcasing artists. So dinner was served over a charger plate by an artists and the painting hung above us on the wall. It was a very nice touch-about 10 resturantes and artists participate (as we could tell from the brochure in Dutch on our table)
First course was a mousse of smoked eel over greens.
(Elena was not a fan)
Second course was truffle butter with hot maiz bread and a bite of greens, mango chutney, and spanish chourizo.
(elena adored the butter and ate pretty much the whole pat straight. Then she munched the chourizo as she loves spicy cured meats)
Then Jake & I had appetizers of brioche with sweetbreads (Jake) and ravioli with truffle and ricotta (me).
Elena's 'dinner' was served nicely at room temperature (as requested) with creamed turnip soup with smoked salmon and lemon creme fresh. She loved it.
The entrees were not as good as the other courses, but Jake had goose and I had duck. The meat was very well cooked and not at all fatty or gamey. But the sides left a bit to be desired.
That was all compensated for during dessert. We were offered only two options - the cheese plank or the 'grand dessert' which was described as an assortment of fruit, pies and chocolates served on a tray. Humm, ok, we'll take the 'grand dessert' and two cappuchino's. Well, the cappuchino's arrived with two hand made chocolates just as the 'grand dessert' cart wheeled up. It turns out it was SEVEN different desserts dished in tiny portions. Elena thought the waiter was the greatest guy ever.
The desserts were, counter clockwise from the top -
cinnamon chocolate mousse
apple tart
fruit stewed in a vanilla vodka sauce
melon cake (like whipped cream - very good)
creme catalan
passionfruit sorbet (elena ate both of these - but the quick taste I had was good)
sweet port drink that was also sort of like a jello shot - we aren't sure what it was
It was a bit much in the end - but atleast Elena was willing to eat anything ice cream, cream, or fruit to help you out.
