Tasty Treats

We enjoyed many lovely foods in Portugal. Aside from the obvious (Port), Portugal has a lovely selection of wines ranging from the 'green' (verde vinos) - a young wine slightly blubbly to lovely red table wines. However, the most amazing beverage was the fresh squeezed orange juice from the surrounding trees. We found any excuse we could to wander into town and have a glass.

The Portuguese also compete with the Dutch for handmade cheese. We picniced out way through quite a sampling, our favorites were the curuado (cured) and fresca (fresh, with our fig cake).

Fig cake, that brings us to dessert - the portugues love their pasteries and we sampled as many as we could, our favorites were a devine white pumpkin, a soaked orange cake, and almond pie and a moist carob cake.



Then, of course, there was the fresh fish, clams as well as the 'pots' of stewed meat and potatoes. The markets were filled with fresh fruits and all sorts of dried delights - from honey cakes to fig 'cakes' (which is actually just mashed and pressed figs - so sweet you can only eat a tiny slice).
