's-Hertogenbosch
Last weekend we finally make it inland from the coast (although, ironically it an area of the country that experience horrible coastal flooding during the 1954 flood) to the small town of 's-Hertogenbosch. Since it was Sunday and nothing opened until noon, we didn't even bother with an early train breakfast, and started our day with pancakes (and real maple syrup - thank you Nana!). Then we caught the train and 30 minutes later we arrived. It was pretty chilly, so we walked to the old town wall (Roman) and ate our lunch sitting next to a cannon a bit in awe that the bulbs were already coming up. Next we walked a meandering path through town and ended up at Sint Jan's Cathedral (St. John's), a little gothic number undergoing massive rennovations. Since mass had just ended, we had the pleasure of roaming the cathedral with the incense lingering in the air. The organ was most impressive - when do you get to hear those thing played anyway? We made our way to Noordbrabants Museum where we saw an impressive new exhibit about windmills. Since it was getting later and we were tired, we saved the artwork for a later visit. We hope to return after April when the boats are running to take a tour of the town from 'under' where the canals wind through the buildings.
