Hip Hiep Hoera! Jake 30 jaar!
That's right, the big 3-0. But don't worry, according to the museum cashier in Belguim he still looks 'under 26' even though he was pushing a stoller when he bought the tickets!
Jake turned 30! We had a traditional 'Sewall Family Birthday' to celebrate. This was actually the first time in atleast 3 years that Jake wasn't in Maine on his birthday. Elena was really excited to decorate for 'daddy's birfday.' Elena and I made a belgian chicken stew for dinner and we had some trappist abbey beer (lekker de smack). I asked Elena what she wanted to get daddy for his birthday. She wanted to get him 'muijes' - little candies they sprinkle on bread here. She has been eating them at Ukkie and is a huge fan. So we bought some and hid them. Then the little snitch proceeded to tell daddy exactly what we had bought AND where it was hidden, 'Probably they are right there' while pointing at my secret spot! Luckily Jake had no idea what muijes were (turns out they are licorice flavored). So, we wrapped them up and Jake got to open them after dinner. Elena was so excited to help. (I think we are in trouble at Christmas). Then, Elena and I had made homemade brownies and Elena put together a big icecream sundae. (complete with muijes, chocolate sauce, strawberry sauce, chocolate sprinkles, and whipped cream!) We sang happy birthday. Elena helped blow out the candles. Poor poppa had to open his cards under the impatient direction of Elena, who couldn't wait.
Luckily everyone's cards arrived (thanks so much!) Especially because none of the packages with Jake's presents arrived in time. (Mental note, next time order more than one month ahead for international shipping).
