Hup Holland!
Since we are behind, this is a bit after the fact but still.
It was our luck to be in Holland for the World Cup Soccer. Every 4 years the world (except for America) erupts into nationalistic pride and countries stop to yell at the TV, pray, burn things, fight, drink beer, etc for the tournament.
Holland prepares by turning anything they can orange. The streets are strung with flags. The fountain in Middleburg was turned a shocking orange (Rit dye? we are just guessing, but it was a lot of something).

Face, clothes, children, food. You name it. We supported the cause by getting elena some new orange baby banz. One of the favorite things are 'wuppies.' Little fuzzy balls that you get at the AH when you spend more that 15 E. Elena loved them and they were a prized possesion at Ukkie. The thing to do was to spell out your favorite player's number on your back.

Then you sing the Wuppie song, 'Wuppie wuppie wuppie. Hup Holland Hup Holland!' You learn it quickly because it alternates with the hits of the 80's in the grocery store.
Of course, in Holland there is mass consumption of Heineken. In the small town next the Hoge Veluwe, the community put up a tent filled with TVs to watch the game. We arrived at the bus stop outside just after the wind. "Sweet Caroline" was blaring while drunk guys wearing day glow orange yelled 'bummm bummm bummmmmmmmmm' at the top of their lungs.

Our lovely dinner in Middleburg was puntuated by the game against Ivory Coast. (we won) The crowning moment was the mass singing of "We are the Champions" as we enjoyed our dessert. Lekker.
Unfortunately, our world cup hopes were dashed by Portugal. It was dirty game with 4 red cards and 12 yellow cards. Jake and I had to start the fan above the stove to drown out our yelling since it was when elena was sleeping. Now all the orange has been packed away, and the orange foods are discounted at the AH (we'll pass...). We are now rooting for England, as they play Portugal next and we want them knocked out quickly.
Perhaps we can do a sabbatical here again during world cup season. It's fun to be in a country where everyone is rooting for the same team.
